These particular Summits brought together top brand marketers and the senior management of the top-spending advertising agencies and interactive media properties to foster greater understanding of the Internet as a viable marketing medium.
• Secured and coordinated speakers for the Summits, including Mike Kelly, President, AOL Network Sales & Solutions; David Verklin, CEO, Carat North America; Andrew Heyward, President, CBS News; Esther Dyson, Chairwoman, EdVentures; Erv Shames, former CEO, General Foods; Bill Sidwell, Director of Global Brand Strategy, Hewlett-Packard, Co.; Rob Norman, Chairman, MediaEdge:cia; Stephen M. • Worked closely with president and vice president of sales to create new online revenue streams for the iMedia website and newsletters, and in securing new clients and maintaining current advertisers.

• Launched Digitrends, a quarterly magazine that served interactive marketers and their agencies with in-depth reviews of the trends, research, tactics, case studies, and techniques developed for and applied in the interactive marketing and advertising space. In April 1999, the Western Publications Association recognized Digitrends as "Best Quarterly Magazine" at the 43rd annual "Maggie" awards ceremony. Also launched a bi-monthly magazine for the electronic retailing industry.

1997-1999 Workforce Magazine, Department/Features Editor
• Maintained ongoing relationships with columnists and freelance writers for monthly material. Wrote feature articles, researched and edited special projects. Worked with design and production departments for direct-to-plate printing process. Also contributed to content development for the company’s Web site at www.workforce.com.

1990-1992 Weider Franching, Inc., Consultant
• Helped designed and implemented a franchise program for the health club and fitness center industry for this $500 million fitness empire.
• Created company’s marketing materials, including logos, business plan, employee handbook, brochures, and promotional videos.

1992-1997 Language Services Institute, Consultant
• Developed a small company in the language acquisition industry. Published six projects with Barron’s Educational Series, Inc.: "Spanish for Gringos," "Inglés Para Latinos," "Spanish for Health Care Professionals," "Household Spanish," "Spanish for Law Enforcement," and "Spanish for Gringos" (video).

1989-1990 Costa Mesa Daily Pilot, Editor
• Designed, edited, and produced a start-up weekly entertainment section for this daily newspaper (circulation: 36,000). Assembled all editorial material, researched and wrote most of the feature articles. Coordinated all freelance work with writers and photographers.

1987-1989 Fullerton News Tribune, Editor
• Designed, edited and produced one of five start-up weekly newspapers for Scripps-Howard. Also worked as a reporter for the company’s daily newspaper (circulation: 24,000).

Summary of Teaching Experience

2001-presentUniversity of California, Irvine, Irvine, Calif.
• Designed a workshop on the literary forms and techniques used in creative nonfiction writing or literary journalism. Class discussion revolves around the history of these two forms of journalism and the cultural context in which writers work. Topics explored include formal considerations such as voice and structure, reporting methods, and ethical issues.
• Designed a workshop to help students gain insights into how to ferret out markets, write compelling query letters, conduct interviews, wow editors and get paid as a freelance writer. Each class combines instruction, in-class exercises and critiquing sessions in a healthy and respectful environment. Also designed a five-week interactive workshop on effective online writing and interactive storytelling.
• Designed a workshop on writing for Websites or online magazines. This lecture/workshop helps students gain insights into how to write a compelling electronic query, target the appropriate Website, write online text using interactive storytelling and writing techniques, and think interactively.

2001-presentOrange Coast College, Costa Mesa, Calif.
• Six (6) semesters of English 100 and 101 Freshman Composition classes. Application of basic principles and procedures of written composition with emphasis on writing and evaluation of student’s own papers. First instructor on campus to teach English 117AD, a course designed to focus on student writing and marketing of in-depth non-fiction feature articles.
• Feature Writing (English 117AD/Communications 117AD). A writing workshop that focuses on student writing and marketing of in-depth non-fiction feature articles. Emphasis on guiding students and developing interesting non-fiction stories from the idea stage through publication and finding suitable markets for publication.

2001-presentSaddleback College, Mission Viejo, Calif.
• One (1) full year Faculty Advisor for Saddleback’s student-run weekly newspaper, The Lariat.
• Six (6) full semester courses in expository writing. Instruction focuses on how to select and narrow a topic, frame a thesis statement, and organize the content into a logical, coherent composition. Original essays, increasing in level of difficulty and in length, are developed through a process approach, including prewriting and peer-editing techniques.

2001-2002Irvine Valley College
• Instructor/JRNL 112 Feature Writing, JRNL 110 News Writing, and JRNL 120 Newspaper Production. Instruction focuses on writing non-fiction stories for publication, concentrating on advanced writing techniques. Production class focuses on newspaper production techniques, focusing on various aspects of producing a campus newspaper.
